VIZIO DEBUTS SUB-$300 TABLET PC

The LCD HDTV maker is getting into the tablet PC game. Vizio has just unveiled an 8-inch Android-based (2.3/Gingerbread) Wi-Fi tablet that’s available through a number of major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Amazon and Sam’s Club. It’s price will be an important selling point: just $299.

The Vizio Tablet pc, nothing complicated about the name – features Vizio Internet Apps Plus, the platform present in the company’s Internet TVs that offers a “unified, sophisticated and intuitive user experience." Users will be able to link the tablet with their TVs via an HDMI port. And of course, there’s access to 400,000 apps in the Android tablet pc Market. The device supports Adobe Flash and is equipped with a three-speaker configuration that allows for stereo sound no matter which way you hold it.

It has a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and two cameras. While it only comes with 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot lets you expand memory up to 32GB. Vizio is marketing the tablet, in part, as a back-to-school device students can use to check email, news and social networks.

"The VIZIO Tablet offers a superior multimedia experience with its three speaker design, home theater integration with IR, and a perfect size for typing, eBooks, gaming and portability," said Matt McRae, CTO, VIZIO. “These innovations and our ground breaking price push the category forward and deliver on our brand promise of Entertainment Freedom for All."

Other than a small hard drive, this tablet comes with just about everything you would expect from a mid-range (or better) tablet, and is likely worth the low price if you don’t care about 3G/4G wireless connectivity. One cool option it has that many others don’t: an app that allows you to turn the tablet into a universal remote.
